Ignite Review

ignite 9th March 2007

With its pumping beats and throbbing rhythms, ignite was the high-energy event it promised to be.

Headlining were premier hip-hop act from Liverpool, Souls Rest, who brought their quality mix of live and produced sounds to Uckfield Civic Centre. Performing alongside were Alec and Sam North, Stefan Tennant and Oli Clark producing a fresh drum&bass set, firmly establishing their talent through an impressive debut. Tom Hickson and MC Fatman kept the party on track with their usual top-quality sound and prodigious MCing.

ignite is about more than music. Woven into the core vision is a desire to make a difference. The Stop the Traffik campaign was highlighted, and many names were added to the declaration: a petition to the UN to put pressure on governments to crack down on human trafficking.

ignite is unique; it has the freedom to morph between genres of music whilst maintaining a quality atmosphere and giving local young people a chance to perform in a professional environment. The event on 9th March fully conformed to the vision, with the mind-blowing talent of the artists being a key ingredient to the sparkling vibe of the evening.

It is difficult to establish which aspect of ignite was the most memorable. The infectious energy of the constantly-dancing young people, the remarkable sounds emitting from the enormous sound system, or the breathtaking quality of DJs and MCs that lit up the stage. ignite was a resounding success, firmly established by the effervescent smiles exuberant dancing that dominated the evening, which was sponsored by The King's Church, Uckfield and supported by Spring Harvest and Ashdown AV.

Lindsey in South Africa!

One of our Young People is currently in South Africa for 6 months serving at a Church in Clarens. Read Lindsey's report here.

I was originally asked to keep this to 300 words, but that is not enough to tell you what a great time I am having here and all that God is doing in Dihlabeng Church! The church is so passionate and has such a desire to help the poor. There will be two new church plants this year, in Fouriseburg and Phutadjhaba, and the church has just begun training 10 future leaders who will one day plant other churches. The church is so involved in the community and I am so excited about all the projects it runs.

I spend two days a week in school, mainly in Grade 4 or 5/6/7, doing everything from wall displays to making popcorn! I also teach a Grade 2 craft class on Tuesdays. It is great getting to know the children, and being involved in the school. I love helping at The Orphan Family; the children are so sweet and it is great fun to dance and play with them, even though communication with the younger ones is difficult! I am also helping at Access Empowerment, which helps Basotho people learn computer skills and English to make them more employable. I shall be helping with English teaching to the leaders of Reheboth church (a plant from Dihlabeng) in Lesotho. I am also taking Sesotho lessons at Access Empowerment, which is good fun and should be useful for talking to older people and little children, whose English is not normally very good!

Once a week, I visit sick people in the township, with People of Hope, to pray with and advise them. The first time I went it was difficult, I was shocked by the poverty of some of the people; but the work that People of Hope are doing is brilliant, and they are always getting opportunities to share about Jesus. Wednesdays I visit a cell group in a Lesotho village, where a church will be planted later this year. As a third-world country, Lesotho is a lot poorer than South Africa, and there are few prospects for people, but God is working in the church there.

I am having such an amazing time here and I am so excited about all God is doing in the church and in me, I would write so much more but there is no more room!
